Spaced Repetition Explained for Students
You forget most of what you study within days — that's not a personal failing, it's just how memory works. Spacing your revision around it is the fix.

You study a topic on Monday, feel confident about it, and by the following Monday can barely reconstruct half of it. This isn't a memory problem specific to you — it's how forgetting works for everyone, and it's predictable enough that you can plan revision around it instead of being surprised by it every time.
Why you forget most of what you study within days
Without any review, memory for new information drops fastest in the first day or two, then continues declining more slowly afterward. The practical version of this: if you learn a topic once and don't come back to it, most of the specific detail is gone within a week, even if the broad idea sticks around. This is exactly why a syllabus you "covered" back in Term 1 can feel almost unfamiliar by the time WASSCE or BECE arrives, months later, if you never revisited it.
The fix isn't more time — it's better timing
Spaced repetition means reviewing material at increasing intervals — shortly after first learning it, then again a few days later, then a week or two after that, then longer — rather than either cramming it once or reviewing it at random. Each time you successfully recall something just as you were starting to forget it, that memory becomes more durable and the next gap before you need to review it again can be longer. Reviewed too soon and it's still fresh (wasted effort); reviewed too late and you've already forgotten it (starting over). The useful window is somewhere in between, and it stretches out over time as a topic becomes more solid.
Cramming and spacing can look identical the night before an exam
Both can get you through tomorrow's test. The difference shows up afterward — crammed material tends to disappear within days, while spaced material tends to hold for weeks or months, which matters enormously when WASSCE or BECE cover a full year or more of content at once.
What this looks like in practice
- Don't finish a topic and never return to it. Build a rough revisit schedule — a couple of days later, then about a week later, then longer gaps as it gets more solid.
- Rotate subjects across the week instead of finishing one before starting the next. This naturally creates the gaps spacing needs — see the weekly structures in the WASSCE and BECE timetable guides.
- Use flashcards that resurface material you're about to forget, not material you just reviewed. This is the core idea behind most flashcard apps' "spaced" review queues — cards you know well appear less often, cards you're shaky on come back sooner.
- Start early rather than relying on a final cram. Spacing needs time to work — it can't be compressed into the final 48 hours before an exam, which is a different situation covered in How to Revise Effectively Before an Exam.
Spacing needs recall to actually work
Spacing out rereading sessions helps a little, but spacing out recall sessions — testing yourself, not just looking at notes again — is where the real effect comes from. The two ideas work as a pair: recall is what strengthens a memory each time, and spacing is what decides when to strengthen it for maximum effect.
